Leta Efter Ame
Film Festival Design System
Leta Efter Ame is a film festival that unites the work of Ingmar Bergman and Robert Bresson through their shared exploration of the human condition. The name blends the Swedish phrase Leta Efter (“search for”) and the French word Âme (“soul”). The trademark reflects this union with layered symbols of the soul: a lotus flower’s four petals referencing Norse mythology, a star symbolizing the soul of the French people, and a compass pointer breaking symmetry to suggest direction in the search for meaning. The wordmark uses the refined Avanti Gothic typeface to echo the character of the films, while supporting text is set in Mr Eaves Sans.
The festival’s visual language includes posters featuring nude body contortionists—symbolizing emotional vulnerability—overlaid with masked images from Sebastião Salgado’s photography. These photographs, primarily from his series on religious pilgrimages, capture small figures set against vast landscapes and reflect the internal journeys of the films’ characters. The circular masks began as concentric shapes that were organically distorted through analog processes, visualizing the imperfect path to self-understanding.
A flickering pattern of alternating geometric units—made from nested circles, squares, and rectangles—serves as the base of the festival’s motion graphics. These pseudo-circular illusions mirror the deceptive simplicity of introspection. The motion piece layers this pattern with shifting masks and close-ups of the poster subjects, culminating in a title translation: Leta Efter Ame – Search for Soul.
